Cassandre (1901–1968)

AM Cassandre ( born January 24, 1901 in Kharkov, Russian Empire, now Ukraine, † June 17, 1968 in Paris, France; actually Adolphe Jean -Marie Mouron ) was a graphic designer, typographer, painter, stage designer and teacher.

Life

The "AM Cassandre " said Adolphe Jean -Marie Mouron was born on 24 January 1901 as son of French parents in Kharkov (Ukraine). Time in Russia, now living in France, he remains in 1915 in Paris, where he makes his high school diploma. After a short stay at the École nationale supérieure des beaux -arts de Paris, he lodges in the studio of the painter Lucien Simon and later occupied classes at the Académie Julian. In order to secure its financial independence, he designed posters from 1921. Those held in a karikaturiven style posters - perhaps influenced by German posters and cartoons - but are hardly preserved.

1922, Cassandre his own studio in Montparnasse in the Rue du Moulin Vert (Paris). During this time he decides all intended for advertising working with his pseudonym " A. Sign M. Cassandre "(until 1928 he signed from time to time with Mauron Cassandre ). He designed famous art deco posters for railways and steam ships, a tribute to architectural structures and the machine, very spiritual closeness to his friend Le Corbusier. Are known mainly incurred on behalf of the CIWL posters for their luxury trains such as the Northern Express or the Étoile du Nord.

1936 drew A. M. Cassandre to America. From Alexey Brodovitch under contract, he designed several covers for the fashion magazine Harper 's Bazaar. He also worked for the advertising agency NW Ayer and there designed the advertising campaign for the Container Corporation of America.

In 1939 Cassandre back to Paris. Since then he has worked primarily as a stage designer for theater and ballet and the free wall painting. 1963 Cassandre designed the logo for Yves Saint Laurent.

In 1964, his works at the documenta III in Kassel in the Department graphics were shown. 1972 AM Cassandre was inducted into the "Hall of Fame" at the Art Directors Club.
