Casteggio

Casteggio is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 6868 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Pavia in Lombardy. The municipality is situated approximately 20 km south-southwest of Pavia.

History

Casteggio is historically to the Gallic settlement Clastidium. In the years 223 and 222 BC, the city of Roman rule is subjected. The passage of Hannibal few years later, can not pass without at the settlement. Here the battle of Clastidium took place. The Via Emilia continues its ascent through the village.

In the late Middle Ages, the place name of Clastidium shifts Chiastitium, Chiastezzio and finally Chiasteggio.

Traffic

North of the village runs in east-west direction, the Autostrada A21 from Turin to Brescia. Furthermore, the Strada Statale 10 Padana Inferiore pervades the community. Pavia leads the former Strada Statale 35 Giovi. The train station is on the railway line Alessandria - Piacenza.

Within the area adjacent to the main town of the fractions Fonderia, Mairano and Rivetta, as well as the residential places Borghetto, Canova, Caretta, Crotesi, Torchio and Tronconero.
