Castel di Sangro

Castel di Sangro is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 6128 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of L' Aquila in the Abruzzo region. The community is located about 88 kilometers southwest of L' Aquila and directly borders the province of Isernia.

History

The place is identical with the ancient Samnites City Aufidena, which was conquered by the Romans in 209 BC. In the Middle Ages played the place as a strategically important place on the way through the Abruzzi a significant role. 1228 the fortress was razed. 1456 and 1656 earthquake destroyed the city each almost completely.
