Castel Goffredo

Castel Goffredo is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 12,397 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Mantua in Lombardy. The community is located about 29 kilometers northwest of Mantua and about 32 kilometers southeast of Brescia. Castel Goffredo is immediately adjacent to the province of Brescia.

History

From the 9th century to 1115, the area was under the rule of the prince bishops of Brescia. Finally, the population changed sides and went in 1137 under the protection of the Princes of Mantua. Meanwhile, from 1348 to 1404, the Visconti of Milan exercised dominion over the region. 1441 reached the Gonzaga family in Mantua again the power over the area. From 1603 to 1707 it was the Duchy of Milan, which prevailed here. In 2002, the congregation of the title città (city) was awarded.

Economy and Transport

The city experienced in the past two hundred years, economic prosperity. Castel Goffredo was particularly known by the textile industry, which produced tights here.
