Castellana Grotte

Castellana Grotte is a town with 19,362 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Bari, in Puglia.

Location and data

Castellana Grotte is located 42 km southeast from Bari. The neighboring municipalities are Alberobello, Conversano, Monopoli, Noci, Polignano a Mare and Putignano.

History

The town developed from the year 1000, was destroyed and rebuilt in the 14th century. The village was part of the fief of S. Benedotto and dispute object of the bishops of Conversano and the local church. Since 1950, the place is called Castellana Grotte, to draw attention to the grotto.

Attractions

The Grotte di Castellana is a cave on the territory of the municipality. The cave was discovered in 1938 and can be visited. At the cave heard the speleological museum Franco Anelli and the observatory Sirio.

The Chiasa Madre is built in a Romanesque- Apulian style in the 12th century.

  • Grazia Salvatori, composer, organist and professor emerita, born in Castellana Grotte, heads up the music competition Don Vincenzo Vitti.
