Castellieri culture

As Castelliere a prehistoric fortress, a fortified settlement or castle is referred to, which was usually on a hill and was surrounded by a simple stone wall.

Within the walls there were mostly quadrangular stone or wooden huts. The first Castellieri originated in Istria during the Bronze Age. The design was later adopted in neighboring regions such as Friuli, Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia. The culture of Castellieri ended in about the 3rd century BC with the conquest of the Romans, who took over some of the hilltop castles as military bases. Remains of Castellieri are still to be found in the respective tracts of land.
