Castelnaudary

Castelnaudary ( Occitan: Castelnau d' Ari ) is a commune with 11,876 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Aude department in the Languedoc- Roussillon region. She belonged to the former French province Lauragais, the center of the Cathars. The inhabitants Chauriens or Castelnaudariens call themselves.

Geography

The city lies at an average altitude of 165 meters above sea level and crossed by the Canal du Midi. This used to be a large ship yard with dry dock.

History

During the Albigensian Crusade Simon IV de Montfort was besieged in Castelnaudary in 1211 by the Counts of Toulouse and Foix.

Since 1977 the 4th Regiment of the Foreign Legion, the Régiment Etranger 4ème is (4e RE), based in Castelnaudary ( until 1980: Régiment d' Instruction de la Légion Etrangère ( RILE ) ). There, the basic training for all new legionaries as well as various developments take place (eg corporal courses ). It is purely a training regiment.
