History

In the present territory of Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the district Montaperti, the Battle of Montaperti took place on 4 September 1260 at the Guelphs and Ghibellines faced each other in the form of Florence and Siena. Just before the gates of Siena suffered a crushing defeat Florence at the time. Castelnuovo itself was first founded by a decree of July 26, 1366 by the Republic of Siena and served as Monteriggioni castle as monitoring the Sienese limits, in this case the border to Arezzo and Florence. Under the Sienese Mino Dei the town walls and castle were built 1373-1374. After several attempts by the Florentine ( 1478 and 1479 ) to take the castle, Siena was forced to equip the city in the late 15th century with a new circle of walls, from which to this day still exists a single tower. As a result of renewed clashes between Florence and Siena Castelnuovo was occupied in 1554 by Florence and suffered the same fate as Siena. It was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany under Cosimo I de ' Medici.
