Castelnuovo Parano

Castelnuovo Parano is a municipality in the province of Frosinone in the Italian region Latium, located about 885 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Geography

Castelnuovo is located in the Aurunci, 135 kilometers southeast of Rome and 57 km southeast of Frosinone. It is a member of the Comunità Montana L' Arco degli Aurunci.

Castelnuovo consists of three parts. The historic village center and Terra Casali lying on the Monte Perano. The modern district Valli Sant'Antonio extends along the Strada Statale 630 from Cassino to Formia in Valle dell'Ausente.

Neighboring municipalities are Ausonia, Coreno Ausonio, Esperia, San Giorgio a Liri and Vallemaio.

History

The name Castel Nuovo is derived from the castle, which Desiderius, Abbot of Monte Cassino in 1059 was built on Mount Perano. Until 1806 Castelnuovo belonged to the monastery of Montecassino. During World War II Castelnuovo was on the Gustav Line and was around them badly damaged in the fighting.

Attractions

  • The small church of Sant'Antonio Abate was built in the 13th century by the Benedictines of Montecassino. It contains valuable frescoes from the 13th and 14th centuries.
  • The donjon and three gates of the castle are preserved in the district of Terra.
