Castelo de Vide is a small town ( Vila ) and a circle ( concelho ) in the district of Portalegre in Portugal with 3376 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011). It is part of the speech de Judiarias, a route of places with historical Jewish communities in Portugal.

History

Finds evidence of a settlement since the Neolithic period. During the Reconquista and the threats posed by the Spanish neighbors of the place won strategic importance. The above- Vide and Vila de Vide -called town was renamed after the construction of his castle in Castelo de Vide. He belonged to 1276 Marvao and has since become an independent district. 1310 was the municipal charter ( Foral ) of King D.Dinis. During the 14th century the city grew beyond its walls, and in particular experienced since the end of the 15th century a significant boost from the wool processing. A significant Jewish community lived here.

Renewed in 1512 King Manuel I, the city rights. In the years 1704-1708 the city suffered destruction by Spanish troops.

Attractions

In the circle are a variety Antas and religious buildings under monument protection, as well as several Roman excavations, several mansions, fountains and historic public buildings. The historical center stands as one complex historical monument. A few kilometers outside of the city lies the archaeological park Parque dos megalítico Coureleiros.

Castelo de Vide is the administrative seat of the homonymous district, which borders the northeast Spain. The neighboring districts are (clockwise starting from the north ): Marvão, Portalegre, Crato and Nisa.
