Castiglion Fiorentino

Castiglion Fiorentino is a place with attached comune with 13,281 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy.

Geography

The site covers about 114 km ². It is about 15 km south of Arezzo and 80 km southeast of Florence on 342 m slm in the Vorappeninen. It lies in the climatic classification of Italian communities in the zone E, 2159 GR / G.

The districts include Brolio, Castroncello, Cozzano, La Badia, Rocca Montanina, La Nave, Mummy, Manciano La Misericordia, Montecchio Vesponi, Noceta in Val di Chio, Orzale, Pergognano, Petreto, Pieve di Chio, Pievuccia, Polvano, Ranchetto, Ristonchia, Santa Cristina in Val di Chio, Santa Lucia, Santa Margherita in Val di Chio, Santo Stefano, and Senaia Valuberti.

The community area is bounded to the north by the municipality of Arezzo and in the south and in the east of the town of Cortona. The nearby towns are Arezzo, Cortona, Foiano della Chiana and Marciano della Chiana.

A mild climate and fertile soil provide good growing opportunities in agriculture.

History

  • 6th century BC: First settlements by the Etruscans.
  • 202 BC: The place is mentioned by Publius Cornelius Scipio.
  • 10th century: The name Castiglione occurs first.
  • 1289: Castiglion Fiorentino comes under the dominion of Florence.
  • 1799: French occupy the place.
  • 1814: After Napoleon the place is Italian again, is from now on to Tuscany.

Economy

It was founded in 1996 twinned with the town of Ronda in Spain and since 2004 with La Charité -sur -Loire in France.
