Castle Combe

Castle Combe is a small village in the English county of Wiltshire with about 350 inhabitants, which is very popular as a tourist destination.

History and Sights

In its present form, Castle Combe was born in the 14th century around the market square with the fountain. The St. Andrew's Church from the 12th century has been preserved in its original state. Only the bell was rebuilt / enlarged in the 15th century.

Originally Castle Combe was a fortress of the Romans. More on that later came a settlement, which was never abandoned. For even the Normans took the geographically convenient location to build a castle. This, however, is today preserved as ruins.

In the Middle Ages Castle Combe was a major site for the production of wool. Therefore, it is not surprising that a Wool Museum, also known as " Weaver's House " takes place in one of the small cottages.

Castle Combe as a film set

In recent years, the small town has been the setting of several films, among others "Doctor Doolittle " ( Erstverfilmung 1966), the first part of Harry Potter film and the fantasy film "Stardust" (2007) were partially filmed in Castle Combe. Some scenes of Steven Spielberg's 2012 nominated for 6 Oscars " companions " were filmed here.
