Castle of Biar

The Castillo de Biar is a castle near Alicante on the Costa Blanca. The castle perched above the town of Biar, a village with 3,620 inhabitants. It was in 1931 declared a monument of national importance.

History

Built in the 12th century, the castle between the Kingdoms of Castile and Aragon was contested. Here was the limit that was set on March 20, 1179 between the two kingdoms. In 1245 James I took the stronghold of Aragon.

Description

In the midst of a two-fold Walling is the heart of the castle, a free-standing, square, three-storey tower. This tower of clay and limestone dates from the 12th century. The twofold Walling was created in the late 15th century. The northern area is protected by a steep slope.

On the second floor of the tower there is a vault in the Almohad style, this is one of the oldest of its kind in Spain.
