Castle of Castellar de la Frontera

The Castillo de Castellar is a castle or a fort north of Algeciras in the Spanish Andalusia in Castellar de la Frontera. It contains a core, called the "Old Castle " ( " Castellar viejo "). The origins of the fort can be traced back to the 7th century. The fort was used before the year 800 by the Moors, who conquered the Iberian peninsula via Gibraltar.

The fort is located in the mountains of the natural park Parque Natural de Los Alcornocales. At the entrance of the fort, there is information, inter alia, over the park.

Conservation and use

Since the 1960s, the castle was a place of retreat artistically versed young people, including Musicians and painters etc. who discovered the fort at a time for themselves, when it was abandoned and there was not even there water.

The fort was from 2005, converted into a hotel complex Tugasa Group, which also operates the hotel in Medina Sidonia. In addition to the hotel are eleven small houses of the castle connected village converted to apartments that are managed by the hotel. Furthermore, also lives there. The former church was converted to an exhibition and sales room. Besides shopping of painting and crafts, there is also a privately operated restaurant in the castle village.
