Castle of Xavier

The Castillo de Javier ( Javier Castle ) is a castle, which is about 45 kilometers from Pamplona in the northeastern Spanish province of Navarra. It is located in almost 500 m above the valley of the river Aragón at the foot of the Pyrenees. Its origins date back to the 10th century. In the 13th and 14th century it was rebuilt in the Gothic style. It was the seat of various noble families such as the Artiedas, the Jaso - Azpilicuetas and Aznárez. The building, whose front with crenellated Gothic towers and walls show the classic silhouette of a Spanish castle, learned in the early 20th century, a renovation and is in good condition. Worth seeing are among others the castle chapel and the Palacio Nuevo from the Renaissance.

Here was born on April 7, 1506, St. Francis Xavier born ( German Franz Xaver ), who worked as a Jesuit missionary in East Asia. The castle is therefore also a place of pilgrimage, a museum and a cultural center. Owner is the Jesuit Order. From this a basilica was built around 1900, which is dedicated to the saints.
