Castlestrange stone

The Castle Strange stone stands on the site of the " Castle Strange House " in the townland Castlestrange (Irish Caisleán Stráinse ) near Athleague in County Roscommon in Ireland. It is a round granite block of 0.9 m diameter and 0.6 m in height, decorated with spirals in the La Tène style from the Iron Age between 500 BC and 100 AD

Only three more stones of this type have been found in Ireland. The Turoe Stone in County Galway and the Killicluggin stone in County Cavan are the best known. The purpose of the stones is unknown but it is believed that they were religious or cultic purposes. It is stated that at the time was a strong continental influence in Ireland, the imitation of the native carvers.

The stone is a protected national monument.
