Castro Verde is a small town ( Vila ) and a circle ( concelho ) in Portugal with 4858 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011).

History

The area around Castro Verde was inhabited in the 6th century BC by the Celts who are already taking down here pyrite and copper in the area of the Mina de Neves Corvo. The name of the place is with oppidum consigned to the territory of the Castro belonged. Even during the time of the Romans the place Castro Verde was right on the transport route for metals and pyrite, which was won in the mines of the area. Visigoths and later the Moors also lived in Castro Verde to the reconquest ( Reconquista ) by the Christians in at the nearby battlefield of Ourique in 1143 to the founding of the state of Portugal was sealed by the Treaty of Zamora. The Royal Basilica of Castro Verde, which was completed under King Sebastian in 1573, was built to commemorate this battle. The painted tiles ( azulejos ) show today in memory of the battle scenes. In the period from the 14th to the 16th century, the area around Castro Verde was the granary of Portugal. This process was reinforced initiated by the King D.Dinis.

Castro Verde received its town charter in 1510.
