Castrocielo

Castrocielo is a municipality in the province of Frosinone in the Italian region Latium, located about 3939 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is located 119 km southeast of Rome and 41 km southeast of Frosinone.

Geography

Castrocielo lies on the southern slopes of the massif of Monte Cairo overlooking the valley of the Liri. The oldest and highest part of the village Villa Euchelia above the left bank of the creek Fossato. The old town of Castrocielo is opposite on the slope of Monte Asprano. Most of the inhabitants of Castrocielo but now live in the districts Castrocielo Stazione Campo and in the valley along the Via Casilina (SS 6), the ancient Via Latina. Here also industry has settled.

Castrocielo is a member of the Comunità Montana Valle del Liri.

The nearby towns are: Aquinas, Colle San Magno, Piedimonte San Germano, Pontecorvo and Roccasecca.

Traffic

Castrocielo is located five kilometers from the A1 Autostrada del Sole, exit Pontecorvo, removed.

With the train station Castrocielo - Aquino the village lies on the railway line Rome - Naples.

History

The region of Castrocielo was inhabited in ancient villas and country estates. Even Juvenal said to have had a villa here.

As 590 AD Aquinum was destroyed by the Lombards, the surviving inhabitants founded on the nearby Monte Asprano Castrum Coeli ( Sky Fortress ). However, since this place was suffering from lack of water, the inhabitants settled in the 11th century into deeper layers around. The church today Castrocielo, Colle San Magno and Roccasecca were founded. Built around the ruins of posts originating from the 2nd century Villa Euchelia moved a part of the inhabitants of Castrum Coeli. Today, the highest and oldest district of Castrocielo. After this palatial villa of the place got the name Palazzolo

Palazzolo was first in the Middle Ages the monastery of Monte Cassino, and later the Count of Aquino. In 1861 it became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1927 and it came from the province of Terra del Lavoro to the newly formed province of Frosinone.

In 1882, Palazzolo called for in memory of the Castrum Coeli in Castrocielo.

Policy

Laura Materials (PSI ) was elected in 2001 at the age of 21 years to one of the youngest mayors in Italy. It was confirmed in May 2006 in office. Her father was 30 years mayor of Castrocielo.

Attractions

  • In the district of Villa Euchelia were remains of the manor of Anicius Auchenius Bassus, consul of the year 408 AD, excavated, which, however, goes back to the 2nd century AD. The best preserved is the crypto- portico of the villa with remnants of the ancient decorative paintings. The name probably derives Euchelia ago by Auchenius. In the complex, this villa also from the 6th century former Benedictine monastery Monacato was built.
  • The parish church of Santa Lucia of Castrocielo was built in 1746.
  • The small Romanesque church of Madonna dei Sette Dolori lies east of town on Lake Capo d' Acqua.
  • On Monte Asprano beside the remains of the castrum Coeli is the small church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo, which was common to 1601 parish church of Palazzolo and Colle San Magno. Every Easter Monday, there will be a procession to the church.
