Kasuarinengewächse ( Casuarinaceae ) are a plant family of the order book -like ( fagales ).

This family includes four genera with about 90 to 95 species. Initially, it was associated with all of this family belonging to the species of the genus Casuarina ( Casuarina ).

The species of this family are widespread in the tropics of the Old World from the Malay Archipelago to India, Australia and the Pacific Islands. Many of the species have not imported German designation and be uniformly referred to as kangaroo tree, casuarina trees or mace.

Description

All species are evergreen trees or shrubs. You see some conifers very similar, but are bedecktsamige plants. Many species have rod- like small branches, which take over the function of the leaves. The true leaves are, however, reduced to small triangular scales. The scale-like leaves are four to 16 in whorls. Stipules are not available.

The plant species are on ( monoecious ) or dioecious ( dioecious ) getrenntgeschlechtig. The inflorescences often look like small cones. The unisexual flowers are greatly reduced. Bracts absent. The male flowers consist of one stamen. In the female flowers two carpels are fused into a superior ovaries; the style ends in two scars. Pollination is by wind ( anemophily ).

Are formed Nuts, they are usually winged (Samara ).

Ecology

The roots have a symbiotic relationship with the nitrogen-fixing (N -fixing ) Frankia.

System
