Catalan football championship

The Campionat de Catalunya (, Catalan Championship ') was an official football club competition. This founded in 1900 competition for Catalan football clubs is the oldest competition in Spain and one of the oldest in Europe.

History

In its period of existence of this competition has been renamed several times. In the first three sweeps of the competition was named after its founder and was called Copa Macaya. The founder was the president of the Catalan club Hispania AC, Alfons Macaya, who had to play the trophy named after him in 1900 for the first time a tournament in league mode.

In 1903, in addition to the Copa Macaya a Copa Barcelona was discharged from a konkurrienden Catalan Football Federation. From the 1903/ 04 season, the tournament of the Federació Catalana de Futbol was organized and was discharged as Campionat de Catalunya. During the season 1938/39, continued to host the Catalan Championship because of the Spanish Civil War. In its early days the Campionat de Catalunya had a huge priority for the participating clubs and the fans, especially in the period before the establishment of the Primera División since the winner is qualified for the Copa del Rey, the most important until 1929 club competition in Spain. From the season 1917/18 the Catalan Championship was held professionally and included a second division.

The tournament of 1936/37, the first four qualified for participation in the League Mediterranea, an organized jointly with the League of Levante championship until then republican remaining parts of Spain.

Under the regime of the Spanish rulers Francisco Franco the Campionat de Catalunya was abolished, since the new government suppressed the national aspirations of the individual regions and only allowed to participate in official Spanish tournaments. Thus, only remained the La Liga and the Copa del Rey as prestigious tournaments.
