The parliamentary elections in Catalonia in 2006 took place on 1 November 2006.

Background

The elections to the Catalan regional parliament were preferred by about a year after the multi-party coalition of the three parties of the Left Socialist Party of Catalonia (PSC ), Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC ) and the green - alternative ICV EUiA was broken apart by the exit of the ERC. The immediate reason for this were disputes about the new Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia, which was approved in a referendum on 18 June 2006 was disappointingly low turnout.

In addition to the political issue, the question of the status of Catalonia within Spain, issues such as the reform of the tax system, immigration to Spain and their social security in the subsequent election campaign played a role. As a result the opposition CiU gained additional votes and seats and became the strongest faction. After negotiations, however, came back to a new version of the old three-party coalition of the PSC, ERC and ICV EUiA. To the President of the Generalitat de Catalunya to the leader of the PSC José Montilla was chosen.
