Catanzaro

Catanzaro is capital of the southern Italian region of Calabria and the province of Catanzaro with 89 062 inhabitants ( as at 31 December 2012). The city covers an area of ​​102.3 km ² and is the seat of the Archdiocese of Catanzaro - Squillace.

Location

Catanzaro is geographically located roughly in the middle of Calabria, at the Isthmus of Marcellinara where the Ionian Sea, is only 35 kilometers from the Tyrrhenian. The neighboring municipalities are Borgia, Caraffa di Catanzaro, Gimigliano, Pentone, San Floro, Sellia, Settingiano, Simeri Crichi and Tiriolo.

The old town is just 10 km inland on three hills. The municipal area extends today with some suburbs such Catanzaro Lido down to the Ionian Sea.

History

Catanzaro was founded in the 10th century as a Byzantine fortress against Saracen raids. Since the 11th century, the town is known for the production of silk, velvet and damask later. Under the Aragonese reign over the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, the city experienced a major boom in the late Middle Ages. After a period of decline, the city recovered again until around 1800. Catanzaro became a railway junction and a commercial center for wheat, oil and wine. Nearby Catanzaro Lamezia of red wine is produced (see also the article viticulture in Italy).

In 1970 the city instead of Reggio Calabria capital of the Calabria region was. The regional parliament convenes continue in Reggio Calabria, the government and many major authorities now have their headquarters in Catanzaro.
