The Cataract River is a river in the east of the Australian state of New South Wales. The source is located about 20 km north of Wollongong Local Government Area in the Wollondilly Shire. It is a tributary of the Nepean River, a source of the River Hawkesbury River.

The source of the Cataract River is located on the western slopes of the coastal mountains, about 1 km north-west of Mount Pleasant. The river was dammed to Lake Cataract, its southern arm is just 5 km from the Pacific coast. Below the dam, the river flows in a northwesterly direction and opens at Douglas Park in the Nepean River. Overall, the Cataract River reached a length of 23 km.

The river is an important water source for the Greater Sydney. The water is collected in the four reservoirs of the Upper Nepean system.
