Catch and release

Under catch and release ( eng. Catch and Release, the following also called C & R) is understood in the angling the gentle resetting caught fish.

Formation

The origin of the C & R is in the carp fishing. There has long been a tradition to weigh fish caught to measure, photograph and reset again. The basis for this is in addition to the desire to catch as many big fish, the popular view that major carps are culinary worthless, but this is heavily dependent waters. Carp from some rivers and ponds still taste excellent even at weights of about 15 kg, and in some other small fish ponds, however, with three pounds are already almost impossible to use.

Fly fishing has a long tradition, with the removal of the catch was more the rule in Europe. The media, et al From the movie A River by Robert Redford, fly fishing in the German-speaking countries in the nineties of the last century became very popular. Therefore, the current fly fishing is very on the American "model" and C & R in part. Meanwhile, C & R- trailer find but in all areas of angling.

Objectives

The followers of C & R for the method in the first place with the Hege of the fish population. Resetting the caught fish whose stock is to be obtained because many anglers are of the opinion that large fish have the best spawning quality, but this is not proven.

Surveys of carp anglers have shown that recessed fish, gentle treatment were provided trapped again ( carp fish through the use of Unhooking Mats for example ), some on the same day. Scientific studies on this have not been performed.

Criticism

C & R has been criticized by animal welfare groups and also by many anglers from ethical and moral grounds. Through the drill fish under stress and possibly pain sufferers. As with C & R no more significant objective is pursued as the fun of fishing fisherman (eg exploitation of the fish as a high quality food), thus there were a unnecessary infliction of pain, stress or even to an animal. On this reasoning includes also the legal situation in Germany.

Controversial is the actual success of the Hege goal. Depending on the species, the survival rates of fish caught after released are very different. It is scientifically proven that the survival rate decreases significantly, the longer the fish caught remain in the drill and on land ( eg for surveying and photographing ), also there are more robust species such as pike and carp, but also very sensitive, such as walleye, bass or salmon.

Terms of Use

While undertaking in countries like the USA and release is often prescribed for certain species, a reset of the fish is only allowed if the fish was caught in the close season, is still below the Schonmaß or captured as by-catch when fishing on a different kind in Germany was; otherwise the animal will be pointless inflicted pain and suffering, which applies in Germany according to § 17 of the Animal Welfare Act as animal cruelty.

In Switzerland, a similar rule applies as in Germany. It is basically not allowed to fish fish that are preserved or protected and must not be taken. Switzerland has a detailed design developed in their notes to the Animal Welfare Regulation under Article 23, letter, the catch and release, subject to certain conditions, for environmental reasons. In Austria there is no clear rule.
