Cathedral of Saint Virgin Mary

The Dormition Cathedral name ( weißruss. катэдральны касцёл імя Найсвяцейшай Марыі Панны ) is the bishop's church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Minsk - Mogilev in the Belarusian capital Minsk. She stands at today's Freedom Square in the upper city.

History

The original Baroque building was erected in the Polish- Lithuanian time as a Jesuit church in 1710. In Imperial Russian time the church after a fire in 1797 and the survey was extended to the cathedral in 1798 and internally refurbished in the Rococo style. A further reorganization took place in mid -19th century.

In the Soviet period, the cathedral was desecrated in 1934 and robbed of their towers. The facade has been aligned to that of the neighboring houses. The church was called the house of body culture. It mezzanines were confiscated; the main room served as a sports hall.

After the end of the Soviet Union in 1994, the church of the Catholic Diocese was returned. With Polish aid was externally and internally reconstructed and rebuilt the facade with its towers. In 1997, the cathedral was consecrated again.

In the immediate neighborhood is the 2002-2005 also reconstructed Old Town Hall of Minsk.
