Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, Brno

The St. Peter and Paul Cathedral ( Czech: Katedrála sv. Petra a Pavla ) is the cathedral of the Diocese of Brno in the Moravian city of Brno. It is located on the Petrov hill in the city center and its silhouette dominates together with the Špilberk the cityscape.

History

The first church dedicated to the Apostle Peter at this point has already been built around 1180 by Margrave Konrad Otto in the Romanesque style. From this building is the crypt receive. 1296 St. Peter became the seat of the Collegiate of Brno. In the 14th century, during the reign of Luxembourg, the church was rebuilt into a three -Gothic basilica. Around the year 1500 the patronage of the church was extended to the Apostle Paul, and it was converted into a hall church.

During the Thirty Years War, the city of Brno in 1643 and 1645 was unsuccessfully besieged by the Swedes. Here, the church was badly damaged by cannon fire and burned down. The towers collapsed. Between 1651 and 1652 the church was first produced only provisionally, from 1743 to 1746 then renovated extensively by architect Moritz Grimm.

1777 St. Peter and Paul became the Episcopal Church by Pope Pius VI. newly established second Moravian bishopric Brno. On this occasion, the interior of the church was rebuilt in the Baroque style. From this period, among others the monumental pulpit.

Between 1889 and 1891 the church was extended by a neo-Gothic presbytery and added a new eleven -meter high altar. The stained glass windows depicting scenes from the life of the Church cartridge Peter and Paul date from this period. Today's distinctive towers were not built until 1901-1909 by the Viennese architect August Kirstein. Kirstein had prevailed with his design against 41 competitors.

Noon bells

The lunch bell will be held in the Cathedral clock not 12, but already an hour earlier at 11 clock. According to legend, the Swedes had promised to break off the siege of the city on August 15 at noon. When the battle was in progress, the clever Brno therefore already decided to ring at 11 clock and so the Swedes withdrew without having accomplished anything.
