Catherine Carswell

Catherine MacFarlane Carswell ( born March 27, 1879 in Glasgow, † March 19, 1946 ) was a Scottish author and journalist.

She was born as the second of four children. After her graduation she spent two years studying music at Dr. Hoch's Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main. In 1901 she began studying English literature at the University of Glasgow, which, however, did not graduate. Her first novel, Open the Door! was published in 1920 and awarded the Melrose Prize. Even if this is not an autobiographical novel, the main character Joanna the author is very similar. Two years later she published her second and final novel, The Camomile. Catherine Carswell died at the age of 66 years in March 1946, her son published after her death, who wrote her autobiographical fragments under the title Lying Awake. An Unfinished Autobiography.
