Catherine Helen Spence

Catherine Helen Spence (* October 31, 1825 in Melrose, Scotland, † April 3, 1910 ) was an Australian writer, feminist and social reformer who wrote in 1854 with Clare Morrison the first written by a woman 's novel about life in Australia.

Life

Catherine Helen Spence emigrated with her family from Scotland to Australia in 1839 and wrote in 1854 with Clare Morrison the first written by a woman 's novel about life in Australia.

In the following years she wrote five other novels, the last of which, Handfasted (1884), was published posthumously. Your interest in the social question in Australia led them to hold a lecture tour of the United Kingdom and the United States.

Your commitment to a proportional gender distribution in public offices she described in her book A Plea for Pure Democracy ( 1861). In addition, she was author of the first textbook on social studies in Australia, which was published in 1880 under the title The Laws We Live Under.

Mid-1890s, she advocated the establishment of Australia, which was established on 1 January 1901. After the founding of the Australian House of Representatives under the Constitution of Australia, she was the first woman, albeit unsuccessfully ran for Parliament.

Appeared posthumously in 1910 her autobiography titled Catherine Helen Spence: on Autobiography, which was completed and published by Jeanne Young.

For the centenary of the federation of Australia, she was honored in 2001 by a special bill of the Australian Dollar: Together with the "Father of Australia " and five-time premier of New South Wales, Sir Henry Parkes appeared to her portrait on a five- dollar bill.
