CATOBAR

The abbreviation CATOBAR ( Catapult Assisted Take Off But Arrested Recovery ) refers to a system of the launch and recovery of aircraft on aircraft carriers and refers to aircraft that are designed according to the CTOL principle, ie on conventional takeoff and landing by accelerating or coasting depend, in contrast to STOVL or VTOL.

The system results from the lack of space that exists on aircraft carriers and the result is that the start and runways for the necessary acceleration and coasting are too short. In CATOBAR the carrier aircraft will be using special catapults accelerated to a sufficient speed and braked by retaining ropes while landing. If you are starting with the help of launch pads, is the talk of STOBAR.

The very first aircraft carrier in the world, such as the USS Langley (CV -1), used CATOBAR. Today, the system is mainly used on aircraft carriers of the U.S. Navy, but also on the French Charles de Gaulle.
