Cauca Department

The Departamento de Cauca is a province in south-western Colombia. To Cauca, which is bordered to the west by the Pacific Ocean, includes the islands of Gorgona (about 50 km from the coast) and Malpelo ( about 450 km from the coast). The other boundaries divides the province in the north with the departments de Valle del Cauca and Tolima, Huila and Caquetá in the east with the south and with Putumayo and Nariño.

The Cauca is one of the departments with the highest proportion of indigenous people ( esp. Paez ( Nasa proper name ), Guambiano and Embera ). For Cauca and the Pacific island of Malpelo belongs 500 km west of the coast.

Cauca is one of the poorest departments of Colombia. In agriculture, the cultivation of maize, sugarcane, wheat, bananas, coffee and potatoes dominate. Gold, oil shale and sulfur are the natural resources of Cauca.

In Cauca are sprawling nature parks, including the Island Natural Park Gorgona y Gorgonilla.
