Caucagua

Caucagua on the map of Venezuela

Caucagua is a Venezuelan city in the state of Miranda, the administrative seat of the district Acevedo. The name comes from the Cumanagoto language and is intended to mean ' wild water'.

The village was named for a long time Valle de Araguata. In 1752 it was renamed Caucagua. The Bishop Mariano Martí called it in 1784, Nuestra Señora del Valle de la Santa Cruz de Caucagua. The population amounted in 1783 to 2422 inhabitants. In 2001, the city had about 35,000 inhabitants.

The importance of the village grew, as it was on the road between Caracas and the East. It was a center for Kakaohaciendas which formed the economic engine of the region. Many of the inhabitants are mostly descendants of black slaves who were used in colonial times to grow cocoa.
