Caulonia

Caulonia is an Italian town in the province of Reggio Calabria in Calabria with 7060 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Caulonia is located 121 km northeast of Reggio Calabria on the eastern slope of the Serre. The neighboring municipalities are Nardodipace (VV), Pazzano, Placanica, Roccella Ionica, Stignano. The height of the village is 298 m s.l.m.; the highest point is the Monte Gremi 1210 m slm high.

The town includes the villages of Agromastelli, Campoli, Crochi, Cufò, Foca, Marina di Caulonia, San Nicola, Ursini and Ziia. Marina di Caulonia is inundated with tourists and is ideal for water sports.

Attractions

The town has a ruin of a castle. The Church of S. Zaccaria originates at the origin of the Middle Ages, but has been renovated.

On the territory of the municipality lies Monasterace the archaeological area of ​​Caulonia or Kaulon. There are still walls and another of the Greek city. The finds that were found here are exhibited in the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia in Reggio Calabria.
