This is clearly documented by pictures of old masters such as Van Dyck, who coined the image of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as a friend of the children, on his painting " Children of Charles I ". When the dogs were registered in 1892 as King Charles Spaniel for the first time in the Kennel Club Stud Book (England), the dogs had become kurznasiger. Presumably through introgression of the Japanese Chin, this change was brought about.

The American Roswell Eldridge began in 1926 in London prize money for each of King Charles Spaniel with a long nose, so as van Dyck portrait of Charles I on his and his spaniel had shown. 1945, these dogs were recognized as a new breed. In the English Civil War in 1642 the royal troops Charles I as " Cavaliers " were called, therefore, the new breed was given the " Cavalier ".
