Caxias do Sul is a city in Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil.

The city has around 420,000 inhabitants and was founded by Italian immigrants on June 20, 1890. The Italian influence is still being felt today. It is the second largest city in Rio Grande do Sul.

History

The history of Caxias do Sul begins before the Italians, when the region was inhabited by Native Americans. The colonization by Italian immigrants, most of whom were Italian Farmer from the Veneto, began in 1875 in Nova Milano. They also met people from Lombardy, from the Trento and from other regions. Although they had received support such as tools, supplies and seeds from the government, everything had to be repaid. Two years later the settlement the name of Caxias was given.
