Caxias is a municipality in the district ( Municipio ) of Oeiras 3.4 km ² and 8943 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011). This gives a population density of 2623 persons per km ². The patron of the place is Nossa Senhora das Dores.

The place was on 24 July 1997 Vila ( town ) collected, followed by the founding of the eponymous municipality on 12 June 2001 by elimination of Paço de Arcos.

During the Estado Novo ( dictatorship ) in Portugal, the political police PIDE operational there a prison that was stormed on April 27, 1974 in the Carnation Revolution.
