The Cayambe is a complex volcano in the Andes in Ecuador.

The first ascent was in 1880 by the British mountaineer Edward Whymper and his two Italian companions, the brothers Jean -Antoine Carrel and Louis.

Location

The Cayambe is located about 60 km northeast of Quito, Ecuador's capital city. At its foot lies the town of the same name, named after the volcano Cayambe.

The summit of Cayambe is located at 5,796 m, the Cayambe is the third highest mountain in Ecuador thus, after Chimborazo and Cotopaxi.

The summit of Cayambe is located about 4 km north of the equator line. By the year 2006, the southern slopes of Cayambe glacier was the only permanent white dot on the equator. Because the glaciers retreated in recent decades, however, there is no more icy equator point. In the rainy season, however, the south-facing slope is often snowy and thus nevertheless still the only point on the entire equatorial line with regular snow.
