Cayemites

The Cayemites ( kreol. Kayimit, French Les Cayemites ) are two islands in the Gulf of Gonâve in the west off the north coast of the Tiburon Peninsula of Haiti: Grande Cayemite ( Gwo Kayimit ) and Petite Cayemite (Ti Kayimit ).

The islands are a total of 45 square kilometers. The only about one square kilometer little Petite Cayemite situated just west of Grande Cayemite. The islands are located about 35 kilometers east of the city of Jérémie and belong administratively to the department of Grand Anse and the opposite on the coast lying community Pestel. The population is 18,000. The island's capital is Anse à Macon (2500 inhabitants) on the southeast coast, the nearest city, Pointe Sable (1600 Ew. ). Lack of water restricts agriculture. It is operated fishing.
