Cayenne
Cayenne [ kajɛn ] is the capital and largest city of the French overseas department of French Guiana with 57 229 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) and an area of 23.6 km ². The town lies on a peninsula at the mouth of the Río Cayenne into the Atlantic.
A few hundred meters off the northern tip of the peninsula lie the three Cayenne Ilets Dupont, belonging to the canton of cayenne 2 Nord-Est. 45 km northwest of Cayenne are related to the city and the canton of cayenne 1 Nord -Ouest Îles du Salut, which served France as a penal colony. The Cayenne Airport is approximately 16 kilometers southwest of the city on the territory of the neighboring community Matoury.

Cayenne is divided into the following neighborhoods ( quartiers ):
- Centre ville: De Gaulle, Buzaret, Amandier, Les Palmistes.
- Centre ville quarters Sud: Village Chinois, Ronjon, Palétuvuiers, Malouins, Urban Regeneration, ZA Galmo
- Faubourg North: Mirza, Médan, Les Flora Lies, N'zila, Faubourg l' Abri, Lafaurie, Césaire, Thémire, Anatole, Brutus, mango, jacaranda, eau lisette
- Faubourg sud: Bonhomme, Jean François / Pascaline, Cabassou, Raban, Novaparc NR, ZA Calimbe, Uranus
- Périphériques North Cite Pasteur, Cité Chatenay, Cité Horth, Cité Grant, Cité Coulee d'Or, Cité les pépites, Cité Zéphir
- Périphériques Sud: Apounau, La Roseraie, Cité Mortin
Regardless, there is a division into six cantons (each with associated neighborhoods or quartiers ):
- Canton cayenne 1 Nord -Ouest (Fort Cépérou, Pointe des Amandiers, Buzaret, Îles du Salut )
- Canton cayenne 2 Nord-Est ( Chaton, Montabo, Zéphir, Bourda, Suzini )
- Canton Cayenne 4 Centre (Centre, Mirza, De Gaulle, Buzaret, Palmistes )
- Canton cayenne 6 Sud -Est ( Rebard, Coulee d'Or, mango, Baduel, La Roseraie, Les Maringouins, Bonhomme, Mont- Lucas)
History
A first French colonization of the peninsula in 1604 by an expedition sent by Henry IV was abandoned after a few years due to the destruction by the Portuguese. On November 27, 1643 the city was re-established under the lieutenant-general of King Charles Poncet de Brétigny. In 1652, the first slaves were introduced.
