Cayley (crater)

14.2

Cayley is a small impact crater in a flooded by basaltic lava area west of the Sea of Tranquility. The round, bowl -shaped structure is located northwest of the crater De Morgan and D' Arrest and has an inner layer, which occupies about a quarter of the crater diameter. The inner slopes are of relatively bright tone and stand out sharply from the surrounding environment. However, Cayley 's not nearly as bright as the larger a trifle crater Dionysius in East southeast, from which he also stands out due to the lack of a system of rays.

Shifted slightly to the west and north is the crater Whewell, which has approximately the same size. In the north, the Rima Ariadaeus that has a east - southeast orientation extends.

The terrain surrounding the crater is somewhat similar to the lunar Mare, but has a higher albedo and is overlapped by the Sea of Tranquility on the eastern edge. Moon Scientists suspect that this level has arisen as a result of the deposition of ejecta from an impact basin. The most likely source is the Mare Imbrium to the northwest.
