Cayman Brac

Cayman Brac is one of the two smaller islands of the Cayman Islands. It is located about 143 km northeast of Grand Cayman. In 1822 the 39 410 inhabitants of the Cayman Islands to live on this island (as of 1999).

Cayman Brac is about 19 km long and 2 km wide on average.

The island was named after a limestone cliff. Brac is the Gaelic word for cliff.

On the island is the Cayman Brac Museum.

Just as Little Cayman, the island was discovered in 1503 by Christopher Columbus. The first inhabitants were British -born settlers who came in 1833 on the island. Partly because of the many caves, the island was a haunt of pirates, where often loot was hidden in strong hurricanes (such as the 1932, the great devastation wreaked ) but the caves were used as a protective refuge.
