Cayor

The kingdom of Cayor (1549-1879) was a state in what is now Senegal.

1549 the kingdom of Cayor the Battle of Danki under the Damel (king) Detie Fu Ndiogu was independent of the kingdoms of the Wolof. It was the largest and most powerful of its spin-offs. The capital was Mboul. To the northwest was Waalo, to the east the rest of the Wolof Empire, in the south Baol and Sine.

The Damel of Cayor ruled addition of the area of Lebou on Cape Verde and was Teignes (king) of Baol. The Office was occupied by a four-member Council of the Diawdine Bul, the hereditary chief of the Dyambour ( free men ), the Tchialaw, chief of Dianbagnane, the Botale, chief of Ndiop, and the Badgie, chief of Gategne. Currencies were Cowrie shells and gold.

About 1861 Damel Lat Dyor Diop was Muslim. Defeated him in 1868 the French governor Louis Faidherbe in the Battle of Dekheule and conquered Cayor. 1869 Lat Dyor Diop was deposed. 1871 Cayor became independent again. 1879 was conquered again by the French, Latin Dyor Diop sent again. On October 8, 1886 Cayor was dissolved. The 30th and final Damel Samba Laobe case was killed in Tivaouane.
