Cazis

Cazis (Romansh Cazas or Tgazas = Ladle because of the trough-like spatial location of the original church in the valley) is a municipality in the district of Thusis in the back of the Rhine district in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland.

On 1 January 2010 the municipalities Cazis, Portein, Prec, Sarn and Tartar merged to form the new municipality Cazis.

Geography

The community is located about three kilometers northeast of Thusis and existed until the end of 2009 from the 7 fractions ( districts ) Luvreu, Oberrealta, Ratitsch, Schauenbergstrasse, Summaprada, Unterrealta and Valleina. On 1 January 2010, the above-mentioned previous communities Portein, Prec were ( with fractions Dalin and Raschlegnas ), Sarn and Tartar merged as new factions with the community Cazis. From the original municipality (until end 2009) of 727 ha 299 ha of woods and forests covered 298 ha are agricultural Nutzgebiet, 99 ha settlement area and the remaining 31 ha of unproductive area (mostly mountains).

History

The first settlers had settled at the end of the Neolithic period at Peter Hill, northwest of the village. They lived due to the bone finds of animal husbandry and hunting. Later agriculture was operated. Further up the valley the Cresta settlement was (2300-800 BC) in a crevice.

In the Eastern Township area is the parish church of St. Martin. It was probably built in the 7th century. Today it is used as a burial church. The Monastery of the community was the oldest north of the Alps. Near the monastery is the chapel of St. Wendelin, which was built by pilgrims, merchants and farmers.

The two village churches of St. Paul and St. Peter are from the 14th century., The stone church was built in 1996. 1834, after the Rhine had burst its banks after a heavy thunderstorm on August 7, a Rhine correction to ensure the road was carried out.

1855 was the ' Realta ' opened in Cazis and 1919 a mental hospital. From this developed the Penitentiary Realta and the clinic Bever.

As from 1894 to 1903 the railway Chur- St. Moritz of the Rhaetian Railway was built, the three stations Cazis, Rodels - Realta were built and Roth wells in the municipality. 1905, the power plant Sernf - Nieberenbach was built. It was nine years later expanded and renamed in power plant Zervreila. 1963 were able to move into the new school building Quadra four primary and three secondary classes. 1971 School St. Catharina was opened. In 1850 Cazis had 755 inhabitants.

Languages

Until around 1800, said almost all Caziner residents Sutselvisch, a Grison Romanesque dialect. By 1870, the Romansh had the absolute, 1880 with 49% still a relative majority. But in 1900 spoke a little more than half of the population German. By 1941, the proportion of Romansh dropped to 18%. The change of language continues inexorably, as the following table shows:

About 8 % of the population still understands Romansh. German is the only language authorities today.

Origin and nationality

From the end of 2005 1501 residents were in 1286 ( = 86 % ) Swiss nationals.
