cdrkit

Cdrkit is a by the Debian project called into being the elimination of the cdrtools, a widely used software package for creating CDs and DVDs. A part of the package wodim ( for Write Optical Disk Media ), which is a fork of cdrtools cdrecord the. Other components are icedax ( Incredible Digital Audio Extractor, in German: Incredible digital audio ripper ) and genisoimage, a descendant of mkisofs with the support of boot code for some additional architectures.

The aim of cdrkit is to provide previously by the cdrtools functionality offered to the user as far as possible available so that existing front ends such as K3b can be used directly. An important difference between the two software packages is the license, they are otherwise partially compatible. However, the cdrtools being actively developed, and write Blu -ray media as opposed to cdrkit in the meantime, while the latter essentially only learns bug fixes. For new functionality such as Blu -ray support, refer to the dvd rw-tools and the libburnia project. cdrkit is now only a temporary solution to these dar.

Formation

Cdrkit originated as a response to a change in the cdrtools license to CDDL by their author Jörg Schilling. The Debian maintainers of cdrtools package looked so compatibility with the GPL not given sufficient and relied on statements with this assessment of the Free Software Foundation.

The loud Debian potentially conflicting or invalid in parts licensing has been assessed as not suitable for further distribution within the Debian distribution, which makes the removal of the original cdrecord and Fork (based on an older version under the original license), according to Debian necessitated.

The most widely used Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Red Hat, Fedora, openSUSE and Mandriva are followed Debian and have cdrtools replaced by cdrkit.
