Cecil Gordon

Cecil Gordon (born 21 June 1941 in Horse Shoe, North Carolina; † 19 September 2012 in Lexington, North Carolina ) was a NASCAR race car driver and NASCAR team owner. He rode from 1968 to 1985 in the Winston Cup, the highest division of the NASCAR Sports, today's Sprint Cup. He is not related to the currently active Sprint Cup drivers Jeff Gordon and Robby Gordon.

Career

Cecil Gordon began his NASCAR career in 1968. He started in ten races. His best result was a 13th place at the Beltsville Speedway. In 1969, he drove 51 of the 54 races of the season for the team by Bill Seifert. He came eight times in the top 10 and once in the top fifth As of the 1970 season, he started with a private car with starting number 24, which is used by four-time Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon since the 1992 season. Until 1983 he drove in his own car. He drove a total of 450 races, came here 29 times in the top 5, but never made it a race or to win the championship. His best results were third in the championship courses that he took in the 1971 season and the 1973 season. In the last year in which he used his own car, 1983, he moved to Chrysler. However, he did not have the hoped-for success and finished his race team. In 1985 he returned back again for a race in the Winston Cup. He drove a Chevrolet with the start number 51 by Arnie bag. He finished the race in 30th and last place, since he already retired after seven laps with steering problems.
