Nesbitt grew up in Edmonton on, where his family moved in 1922, where he made his 1929 high school graduation. He studied from 1930 at the University of Toronto with a Bachelor 's degree in 1934 and a master's degree 1935., 1937, he was there with Richard Brauer PhD ( On the regular representations of algebras ). As a post - graduate student, he was 1937/38, on the recommendation of Brauer at the Institute for Advanced Study. From 1938 he was at the University of Michigan, where he was an assistant professor in 1941, associate professor in 1946 and professor in 1952. 1960/61 and 1970/71 he was faced with the mathematics faculty and 1962 to 1967 he was Deputy Faculty Board. In 1980 he retired.

Initially he worked on algebra and representation theory, which led, among other things several papers in the Annals of Mathematics and a book of Emil Artin on Artin rings. Later he turned to the insurance mathematics, which he wrote a standard work with co-authors 1986.

With his PhD (1963 ) Donald R. Schuette, he developed the Schuette - Nesbitt formula in insurance mathematics. He trained many leading actuaries ( and several subsequent presidents of insurance companies in the U.S.).
