Geography

The river rises north of Sargeant in Dodge County, Minnesota, and flows through the Mower County, before it passes through the northern border of Iowa.

In the further course of the southeastern Cedar River flows through the Mitchell, the Floyd, the Chickasaw and Bremer County before it reaches the closely spaced cities Cedar Falls and Waterloo in Black Hawk County. After flowing through the Benton County and reached in Linn County Cedar Rapids, the largest city on its banks.

After the Cedar River flows through the still Johnson, Cedar and Muscatine County before flowing in Louisa County in the city of Columbus Junction in the shorter Iowa River. This flows about 40 km to the southeast in the Mississippi River, which forms the border with Illinois.
