Cedros Island

Isla de Cedros, German meaning Cedar Island, is an island off the coast of the Mexican state of Baja California in the Pacific. The island lies 426 km south of San Diego. It is 22 kilometers from the mainland ( Punta Eugenia ). The island has an area of ​​348.295 km ². The most important of the eight settlements are Cedros ( capital ) and Punta Morro Redondo (port, airport). It forms one of 24 districts of the municipality of Ensenada. The 15 km further west Islas San Benito also belong to the district Cedros.

Geography and climate

The highest mountain is Monte Cedros with 1205 m height. The low points of the island have little rainfall, so deserts arose. At higher altitudes, there are oaks, junipers and pines. On the island of fog is frequently observed. Large sea lion colonies are found on the west side.

Every few years, the island is haunted by a hurricane.
