Celano

Celano is a town in the province of L' Aquila and the Abruzzo region, with 10,881 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012).

Celano is located on a hill above Lake Fucino and is built on the orders of Frederick II castle with corner towers, Piccolomini, dominated, which dates from the year 1450 in its present form. The neighboring municipalities are Aielli, Avezzano, Castel Subequo, Cerchio, Collarmele, Gagliano Aterno, Luco dei Marsi, Ovindoli, Pescina, San Benedetto dei Marsi, Secinaro and Trasacco.

The three churches have Celanos facades in the style of the 13th century such as the churches in L' Aquila.

Celanos origins date back to Lombard time. A Count of Celano was first mentioned in 1178. 1223, the city of the Emperor Frederick II was destroyed after its waste. An earthquake devastated Celano 1915 very difficult.

Celano is the birthplace of Thomas of Celano ( Tommaso da Celano ), a high medieval writers and chroniclers.

History of Religion

According to tradition, the Christian martyrs Simplicius, Constantius and Victorinus were beheaded in the year 159 or 162 on the orders of the Roman emperor in Celano. Relics of the three martyrs are kept in a church in Celano.
