Celtic knot

The plaited or wattle is an ornamental decorative element.

Made it out regularly intricate, ribbon-like lines or stripes. Application finds the ornament on both objects of the minor arts, on ceramics, as Bauornament and in the illumination. In addition to the strip-shaped Flechtornament there are also widespread Flechtornamente in the form of mats or gratings.

Ornaments made of wattle and nodes are geographically spread over the greater part of the West. Certificates are obtained from early cultures since the Bronze Age, Celtic art, the circulation areas of the Hellenistic- Roman culture, the Islamic- Moorish cultures. A golden age experienced the Flechtornament in the early Middle Ages and the Illumination to the Renaissance.
