Center for Constitutional Rights

The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR German Center for Constitutional Rights) is a non-profit organization that fights for the civil and human rights and their further development. The organization based in New York, USA was founded in 1966 by the U.S. attorney William Kunstler.

Its work is based the United States Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Activities

CCR was known primarily for his commitment to the fundamental rights of prisoners in the U.S. internment Camp Delta. Mohammed Al- Qahtani and Majid Khan, as well as some other prisoners are represented by CCR in court.

Caused a sensation in an application filed with the German Federal Prosecutor's Office on 30 November 2004 lawsuit against Donald Rumsfeld for war crimes and breaches of international law. The former U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld accused is to have placed human rights violations and torture of prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison, or at least approved. The complaint led to threats of Defense of the United States, that legal prosecution Rumsfeld would represent a further burden the relations between the U.S. and Germany. Chief Federal Prosecutor Kay participants rejected the complaint on 10 February 2005 on the grounds lack of jurisdiction.

In the U.S., CCR called for a charge of misconduct against U.S. President George W. Bush.

Awards

  • In 2005, the CCR has been awarded the Law Award from the organization Index on Censorship.
